At first I thought my special makeup had saved me. That’s because I was wearing it when Mike Farling started to like me. He was the first boy who ever did. His family had just moved from Toronto to Akron the summer before. His father was a big shot with Goodyear. I guess it made sense that Mike would be the one to like me; he didn’t know me as Big Eye–Little Eye. I was starting to look normal by then and I’d been working hard at reinventing myself.

Instead of being known as the girl with the eye, I wanted people to think of me as the girl who could roll a pencil-thin joint, the one who could hold her beer better than most of the boys—though they never suspected that my cans were usually still half-full when I pitched them. I was never half as cool as I pretended to be, but nobody knew that.

And I had fooled Mike Farling. His friends told my friends that he thought I was funny and smart, and then my friends told his friends that I thought he was, too. I thought about him all the time. He was the star in all my daydreams. He was in only one of my classes, but I could never bring myself to sit near him, let alone talk to him. We were both shy, so our romance progressed slowly. If it hadn’t been for our friends forcing us to sit across from each other one day in the cafeteria, we might never have worked up the nerve to even say hi.
